'in the shadow and act of the haunting place' is a 'sound painting in the style of some of my multi-track vocal works but scored for voice, horn, tuba, violin, cello, percussion and piano, used mostly for its remarkable 'inner effects'. I have tried to translate some of my extended vocal techniques to these other instruments as the work moves through moments of mystery and strange beauty with some hints of danger. Everyone plays from full score so that each player is aware of the overall 'fabric' of sound, and places each sound on the 'canvas' with full knowledge of the gestures and colors that preced and follow. "in the shadow..." will serve as a model for a new work which I am composing for the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, Calligraphy II, to be premiered in June of this year, designed so that some of the western instruments will be replaced by their Chinese counterparts for an altered timbral and emotional effect, with the voices and breathing of the dancers added to the texture.
