World Premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s Klänge von Lethe

On January 24, Toshio Hosokawa’s Klänge von Lethe for flute, violoncello, and piano will be premiered at the Auditorio Nacional de Musica in Madrid, followed by performances later that week in Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin. The work was co-commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Defusión Musical (Madrid), Kölner Philharmonie (KölnMusik), Daniel Barenboim Stiftung, and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg for Emmanuel Pahud (flute), Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello) and Eric Le Sage (piano) who will perform the work at each of these concerts. Hosokawa describes Klänge von Lethe:

“This work is closely linked to The Water of Lethe for piano quartet, composed in 2015. I feel that the act of composition is comparable to listening to the ‘river of sounds’ constantly flowing within our cosmos, and the notation of these sounds in my own personal way. The ancient Greeks believed that they would be forced to drink the water of Lethe after death in order to erase their memories of previous lives. The gentle flowing of the river Lethe, which allows profound sorrow and the sins of the world to be forgotten, stimulates my imagination. The fear of death and the hope of rebirth coexist in the river’s current.”
