US Premiere of Torsten Rasch’s Violin Concerto with The Spokane Symphony

On January 27, Torsten Rasch’s dramatic Violin Concerto ‘Tropoi’ will receive its US premiere with The Spokane Symphony under the baton of Maestro Eckhart Preu, featuring violinist Mira Wang. The work premiered in Germany in 2016 with Wolfgang Hentrich and the Dresden Philharmonic under Leo McFall, and was co-commissioned by the Dresden Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, and South Carolina Philharmonic.

Rasch’s Violin Concerto is comprised of four steadily intensifying movements. The opening movement, titled ‘Descent,’ references the Gregorian chant melody, Veni Creator Spiritus. The work’s final movement ‘Ascent’ culminates with a quotation from the Easter hymn, Salve festa dies and a return to the exceptionally high violin writing found at the beginning of the piece. With a substantial and virtuosic solo part, this work--Rasch’s first concerto--is one of his most compelling orchestral compositions to date.
