Chaya Czernowin's Knights of the strange and Annie Gosfield's Refracted Reflections and Telepathic Static with the Los Angeles Philharmonic

On March 1, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presents the US premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s Knights of the strange, conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, alongside the world premiere of Annie Gosfield's Refracted Reflections and Telepathic Static, for two pianos and electronics. The concert, "Static Ecstatic", is part of the orchestra’s “Green Umbrella” series and takes place at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Gosfield's Refracted Reflections and Telepathic Static was composed for the piano duo of Christina and Michelle Naughton, who give the work's premiere. Of the work, Gosfield writes:

Refracted Reflections and Telepathic Static was written for Christina and Michelle Naughton, who astonished me with their breathtaking technique and their seemingly telepathic communication. Inspired by their near-mirror image, I composed parallel lines that merge and diverge from identical parts. Separated by small intervals, these lines become flying tone clusters that swoop and dive, spinning a web of fast-moving almost unisons that clash and unite.

Co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Ensemble PHACE, Knights of the strange was premiered by Ensemble PHACE in November as part of the 2015 Wien Modern Festival. Czernowin describes the work as a “piece of music poetry,” where “a few words highlight the speculative/poetic connections between dreams, reality and reflection.” The work, with its title taken from a book Czernowin’s son created when he was a child, features a smaller work for two players embedded within the larger ensemble.

Also this month, guitarist Stephan Schmidt joins the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance of Czernowin’s White Wind Waiting, for guitar and orchestra. The performance takes place February 24 as part of the ceremony honoring Czernowin as the recipient of the 2016 Heidelberger Artist Prize
