BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Gives First Professional Performance of Tippett's Symphony in B-flat

Sir Michael Tippett never acknowledged the Symphony in B flat, composed in the 1930s, in the canon of his symphonic works. Following the first performances of the initial version of the piece, Tippett fundamentally revised the work, shelved it, and did not publish a final version. Now, more than 80 years later, audiences will have the opportunity to hear this work for ths first time as the composer intended it to be heard.

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, led by Martyn Brabbins, gives the first professional performances of the Symphony in B flat on February 1 in Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall. Esteemed Tippett biographer Oliver Sodden will recount the fascinating history behind this work during a pre-concert discussion prior to the first professional performance of the piece. On January 18, Tippett’s Symphony No. 4 will also be heard in performances by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow. Symphony No. 4 was first performed in 1977 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Georg Solti. Notably, this “birth to death piece," as Tippett himself termed it, effectively incorporates sounds of human breath into the fabric of the orchestra through the use of a sampler.
