New York Premiere of Lei Liang's Inkscape at Alice Tully Hall

The Juilliard Percussion Ensemble, led by Daniel Druckman, presents “Bell and Drum: Percussion Music From China” on December 11 in Alice Tully Hall featuring the New York premiere of Lei Liang’s Inkscape for percussion quartet and piano. Juilliard pianist Daniel Joseph Parker joins the performance. The program features music composed entirely by Chinese-born composers, illustrating the contrasting music traditions of East and West and the increasing inspiration that each has provided the other in recent decades.

Inkscape was a joint commission with the Boston Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and Third Coast Percussion, and received its world premiere on October 2 with Samuel Solomon leading pianist Yukiko Takagi and the Boston Conservatory Percussion Ensemble. The composer says of the work:

In traditional Asian landscape paintings, we often discuss two complementary aspects: brush and ink. Piano, in this composition, serves as the 'brush', and the percussion quartet, the 'ink'. Following earlier works such as Brush-Stroke, Aural Hypothesis and Harp Concerto, Inkscape continues to explore the relationship between ink painting, calligraphy and composition.

Free tickets are available at the Juilliard or Alice Tully Hall box offices. More information on the concert is here.
