Leila Josefowicz Honors the Centenary of Bernd Alois Zimmermann

2018 marks the centenary of the birth of Bernd Alois Zimmermann and performances of the composer’s works abound throughout the season and across the world.

Intrepid violinist Leila Josefowicz performs Zimmermann’s Sonata for Violin and Piano on a recital tour this month with pianist John Novacek. Performances take place at the University of Chicago (November 3) the 92nd Street Y in New York (November 4), the Herbst Theatre presented by San Francisco Performances (November 7), the University of Santa Barbara (November 8) and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC (November 11).

Also this month, Christoph Altstaedt leads the Landesjugendorchester Baden-Württemberg in a tour of performances of Zimmermann’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra “Nobody knows de trouble I see” with soloist Simon Höfele. The work, which uses the spiritual of its title as its compositional basis and incorporates a wide range of musical styles, is a statement against racial hatred and discrimination. Performances take place throughout Germany from November 3 to 10.

On January 19, 2018, the US premiere of Zimmermann’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra "en forme de pas de trois" takes place with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and solost Robert deMaine, with Susanna Mälkki conducting.
