Jonny Greenwood's Score to <em>There Will Be Blood</em> Live to Projection at the New York Philharmonic

On September 12-13, the New York Philharmonic, led by Hugh Brunt and featuring violinist Michelle Kim, presents a live performance of Jonny Greenwood's score to Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood as part of "The Art of the Score" series. Greenwood's riveting film score was performed live as the film, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, was projected on screen above the orchestra.

The Rolling Stone's Peter Travers called There Will Be Blood the film of the decade and wrote that Jonny Greenwood provided “a sonic explosion that reinvented what film music could be.” Alex Ross, writing for The New Yorker, cited Greenwood’s “unearthly beautiful score” as a revelatory example of personal musical language, contrasting it with the clichéd devices of most films: If the smeared string glissandos on the sound track suggest liquid welling up from the underground, the accompanying dissonances communicate a kind of interior, inanimate pain."

Greenwood has adapted the music from the film score of There Will Be Blood into a version for string orchestra with ondes martenot (or oboe). The Suite from 'There Will Be Blood' received its world premiere in 2012 at the Holland Festival by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta led by André de Ridder. A recording of the work was released in 2014 by Deutsche Grammophon, in performance by the Copenhagen Philharmonic under André de Ridder.
