Huw Watkins Curates Three Concerts for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales

Huw Watkins, who is currently the BBC National Orchestra of Wales's Composer-in-Association, curates three exciting programs for the orchestra in January. These programs feature music that has shaped Watkins as both a performer and composer. The first takes place on January 12 and features Sir Michael Tippett’s Suite in D for the Birthday of Prince Charles, Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto (with Watkins as soloist), and Béla Bártok’s Concerto for Orchestra. Martyn Brabbins conducts.

The following week, on January 19-20, Xian Zhang conducts the world premiere of Huw Watkins’ Spring (a Radio 3 Commission), which is paired with Beethoven’s triumphant Symphony No. 9 in D minor, ‘Choral.’ Finally, on January 31, Ryan Wigglesworth leads the orchestra in a collection of works associated with Huw Watkins’s time at Cambridge University including Alexander Goehr’s Sinfonia, Watkins's own String Trio, and John Woolrich’s Concerto for Oboe. Also on the program is Wigglesworth’s Clocks from "A Winter’s Tale" which will receive its Norwegian premiere at the Grieghallen on January 25 by Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic who co-commissioned the work with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and The Hallé Orchestra.
