Gerald Barry Paired with Beethoven at the Britten Sinfonia

The Britten Sinfonia, led by director and conductor Thomas Adès, embarks on the second year of its Beethoven Symphony Cycle. This spring, Adès interleaves Beethoven’s masterworks with those of the Irish composer, Gerald Barry, including the London premiere of his Piano Concerto (paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 and Symphony No. 5) on May 19, 22, and 27, and The Conquest of Ireland (paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6) on May 20 and 24.  Audiences may look forward to additional pairings of Beethoven and Barry works, scheduled to take place in May 2019 during the third year of the Cycle, including Barry’s Dead March (sharing the program with Beethoven’s seventh and eighth symphonies), and The Eternal Recurrence (paired with Beethoven’s equally grand Symphony No. 9).

Last month, Adès led the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere performance of Gerald Barry’s Organ Concerto with organist Thomas Trotter as soloist, followed by a repeat performance of the work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Barry’s Organ Concerto received its Irish premiere on May 4 with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, led by Stefan Asbury, again with soloist Thomas Trotter.
