Finnish Premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's Hornkonzert

Feb. 09, 2018

Finnish Premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's Hornkonzert

On February 8, the Sinfonia Lahti performed the Finnish premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s Hornkonzert under the baton of their principal conductor Dima Slobodeniouk. Stefan Dohr, for whom this work was composed, was the horn soloist. Other works on the program included Mozart’s Third Horn Concerto, the most frequently heard of the composer’s four horn concertos (also featuring Dohr as soloist), Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, and Jörg Widmann's Con brio.

Rihm's Hornkonzert will receive another performance next month on March 8 by the Aalborg SymfoniOrkester led by conductor Eivind Aadland and featuring Stefan Dohr again as the soloist. In addition, a number of notable territorial premieres of Rihm's works take place in upcoming weeks. These include the Netherlands premiere of Reminiszenz on March 3 by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester led by Thomas Hengelbrock with tenor Pavol Breslik; the Canadian premiere of Duo Concerto for violin, violoncello, and orchestra on March 7 with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra led by Peter Oundjian and featuring violinist Mira Wang and cellist Jan Vogler; and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra's Finnish premiere of Verwandlung on March 9 under Alexander Shelley, featuring pianist Inon Barnatan.
