Chaya Czernowin's On the Face of the Deep Debuts with Ensemble Intercontemporain

On March 30, Matthias Pintscher leads the Ensemble Intercontemporain in the world premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s new work for large ensemble, On the Face of the Deep – BERESHIT (Genesis): Day One, at the Philharmonie de Paris.

Almost 220 years after Joseph Haydn penned The Creation, Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Philharmonie de Paris have co-commissioned seven composers to create new musical settings of the book of Genesis, one for each day of the Creation. On the Face of the Deep is Czernowin’s response to Day One – ‘Let there be Light!’. Listen to Czernowin's recent ensemble work, Ayre: Towed through plumes, thicket, asphalt, sawdust and hazardous air I shall not forget the sound of:

Next month, Czernowin’s highly anticipated new opera—Infinite now—debuts with Vlaamse Opera, led by Titus Engel and with direction by Luk Perceval. The production opens April 18 at Opera Ghent, followed by performances at Opera Antwerpen and the Philharmonie de Paris. Czernowin’s recent interview with composer Clara Ianotta, published in Van Magazine, gives a fascinating glimpse into Infinite now (read it here).

Czernowin's recent orchestral portrait album, "The Quiet", has garnered critical acclaim since its release, appearing on several year-end "Best Of" lists (including The New Yorker and The Boston Globe). You can hear the opening tracks—two selections from Czernowin's Crescendo Trilogy—below:
