Annie Gosfield's War of the Worlds Debuts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic

In a dynamic production uniting the concert hall with the streets of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presents the premiere of Annie Gosfield's War of the Worlds on November 12, with additional performances on November 18. Directed by 2017 MacArthur Fellow Yuval Sharon, who also wrote the libretto, the opera is presented at Walt Disney Concert Hall and broadcast via three defunct air raid sirens throughout downtown Los Angeles.

Based on the infamous Orson Welles radio drama of 1938, Gosfield's opera is performed by the LA Phil New Music Group, led by conductor Christopher Rountree. An international cast of singers including Grammy Award-winning soprano Hila Plitmann performs in the concert hall as well as on site, and the performance also features science fiction film superstar Sigourney Weaver as narrator. Co-produced with The Industry and Now Art LA, the opera promises to be a unique event transporting the anxieties of the original play to the contemporary world of "fake news."

Also this month, piano duo Quattro Mani presents the New York premiere of Gosfield's Refracted Reflections and Telepathic Static at Carnegie Hall on November 15Refracted Reflections was commissioned by the LA Phil and premiered last year on the "Green Umbrella" concert series.
