Alvin Singleton's Different River with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Alvin Singleton's Different River with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Robert Spano leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in performances of Alvin Singleton’s Different River at the Atlanta Symphony Hall on April 7 and 8.

Different River was commissioned and premiered by Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2012. As Singleton describes it, the work is “an ever-changing perspective on a river that is always moving. Each time you step in you’re at a different place.”

Following its premiere, Arts Atlanta hailed Different River as a “shifting, often surprising but well-landmarked sonic landscape.” In the work’s title, Singleton sought a metaphor to express the music’s character, drawing on the Greek philosopher Heraclitus’ statement that “you cannot step twice into the same river” to express the work’s ebbs, flows and divergences.

Later this month, The Atlanta Singers give a performance of Singleton's Gospel, for SATB chorus, at Morehouse College's Adams Concert Hall on April 19 and on April 29, the Fulcrum Point New Music Project gives a performance of In Our Own House, for chamber ensemble, at The Promontory in Chicago, IL.
