Vienna Piano Trio Debuts Johannes Maria Staud's Für Bálint András Varga at Harvard University

On February 26, the Vienna Piano Trio performs the world premiere of Johannes Maria Staud's Für Bálint András Varga: 10 Miniatures for Piano Trio in a new expanded version at the Harvard Music Association in Boston, MA. The composer writes of the work, which is dedicated to the Vienna Piano Trio:

Writing this piece-and by doing so concerning myself with the concept of the piano trio-was no compositional walk in the park. It was, rather, more like a demanding hike with slippery terrain–surmountable only in short stages, challenging in both condition and steadiness underfoot. The ten miniatures, arranged into four sections (miniatures 1-4 / 5 / 6-7 / 8-10), probe a spectrum of moments that are both delicate internalizations and unfettered explosions, both wildly accelerating and lithely pulsating.

This work is an homage to Bálint András Varga, my mentor and advocate, my advisor and fatherly friend, for whom my music and I have so much to be grateful.

Prior to the Harvard performance, the Vienna Piano Trio visits the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York City on February 24 and Boston's WGBH Concert Series on February 25 in which the ensemble performs a program of works by Staud, Mozart and Brahms.
